Paddleboard tour on the Lower Guadiana to Guerreiros do Rio or Alcoutim, with transfer and a traditional lunch. October to April.
The natural border between Portugal and Spain
An incredible natural heritage, the Guadiana river is part of the Lower Guadiana territories. It rises in Spain, in the province of Ciudad Real, at 1,700 m, and reaches the sea at Vila Real de Santo António on the Portuguese side. From Pomarão onwards it becomes the natural border between the two Iberian neighbours.
Going back in time, the Romans called it Anas (“of the ducks”); the Moors added wadi (Arabic for “river”) and it became known as Wadi Ana. In Portuguese it evolved into Ouadiana and later Odiana. Since the 16th century, under Castilian influence, the name Guadiana gained ground, and that is how it has reached our times.
